If you’re in college or a young professional looking to start your own business, chances are good you’ve been considering a business major. A business major is a valuable educational option for people who are interested in entrepreneurship. What can a career in this field offer to you and what kind of career will you land after college?

Why should you major in business? Business major offers a unique opportunity to study various business concepts before entering the professional business world. With a strong business background, you’ll be ready to work in many different settings from government, nonprofit organizations, private sector and more. You’ll also have a foundation of knowledge that you can apply in other careers. Your career decisions will depend on how you plan to use the information you’ve gained.

Are you a creative and goal-setting person who wants to be a successful business owner? Do you enjoy planning and organizing things? A business degree will help you understand the operations of an entire industry, including marketing, operations, financial matters, human resources and other factors. You can find a job in the field where you want to be. For instance, if you want to be an accountant, an accounting major will teach you everything you need to know about bookkeeping and tax laws.

Are you creative problem solvers who are good at delegating tasks? Do you like putting things into perspective and working as a team? You might not have the greatest personality but a business major will teach you how to handle these skills, too. You can find a job in the field where you want to be, as well. For example, if you want to run a boutique, you might consider opening one in your community. You might even decide to venture into your own company.

What kind of degree will you pursue? It’s important to decide between a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree, as both are equally valid. While most business majors only require a Bachelor’s degree, some require a Master’s to take certain courses such as business law, finance, and accounting.

How do you plan to pay for your degree? Most universities have financial aid programs that are available for you. Some require some type of outside funding; others do not, so you’ll need to figure out how much money you have available and how much you can realistically borrow.

When is the last time you took a course in college or university? You’ll need to decide if your courses will be taken online, by mail, or in a classroom setting. You’ll also need to decide when you want to take your classes so you can schedule them around your schedule. Some programs offer a degree program where you finish in less than four years. Others require five or six years, which is often called an accelerated program.

What kind of work will you do with your business degree after it’s earned? Some businesses provide a full range of jobs, while others focus strictly on the business aspect of your career. Some offer entry-level positions, while others will begin with entry-level positions and move upward.

Is your major’s goals based around helping people or building a profit? If your major is geared toward helping people, you’ll need to choose an area of business that will suit this goal. For example, a business administration major will need to choose an area of business that helps individuals and families, while a financial management major will work toward helping people establish their financial future.

Is your major’s school accredited? Some schools won’t give you the chance to attend if they deem that you don’t meet the minimum standards required by the Department of Education. The same goes for online or distance learning programs.

Is it a good idea for you to attend an online or campus based program? Online programs are more affordable and convenient for people who are looking to pursue a college degree while doing their homework or who are simply don’t have the time to travel to a traditional campus.

A business degree is not for everyone. You need to know what you are interested in, have a strong work ethic, and be able to balance a job and school. After that, you’ll be able to become a successful business owner.
