Diversity In The Workplace And How It Challenges Your Staff

It’s a fact that many companies are resistant to the concept of diversity in the work place. Unfortunately, not everybody is on board with this notion. Some individuals are simply uncomfortable with the unknown and will simply adjust to the harassment and discrimination that come with it. However, others might be actively opposed to the very idea of purposely cultivating diversity in the work place.

The fact is that many companies are unintentionally stalling their progress toward equality in the workforce by internal resistance. This resistance comes in many forms, but the most common comes from fear. Fear of being branded a “no-hire” or being left in the dust by a larger company that is perceived as more successful for reasons of its own can weigh heavily upon any manager or employee. Additionally, internal resistance to change often stems from the fear that others within the company will believe that they possess the qualities of a competent leader as opposed to one who simply has an inherent lack of skills.

The purpose of any type of workplace change should be to increase the skills of every employee. If that goal is accomplished, then there should no longer be an issue. However, many companies are bogged down with an approach towards diversity and inclusion initiatives that are not productive. Often, these initiatives are simply not implemented in a way that increases employees’ access to equal opportunity. Most often, this results in little more than tokenism – employers creating an environment that is inhospitable to minorities in order to appease a vocal minority.

There are a number of ways that any employer can ensure that its workplace culture fosters a true sense of equality. A great place to start is by simply removing bias based attitudes and behaviors when making recruiting and hiring decisions. A simple way to do this would be to implement inclusion initiatives. Inclusionary policies do not just offer an approach to diversity and inclusiveness; they also create a work environment that is friendlier towards all individuals.

Many companies view workplace diversity as a burden or an intrusion on their time. By implementing inclusionary initiatives, however, they are doing exactly the opposite. Inclusionary policies are about increasing the power of every employee – regardless of race, gender, religion or age – by making them feel comfortable and welcome in a work environment that looks toward everyone. By creating a sense of acceptance within a workplace, these types of initiatives actually create a stronger sense of power and self-worth within all employees.

Diversity is something that is faced by everyone. Everyone is different, including those with different religious perspectives, ethnic backgrounds, gender perspectives and even political views. Because of this, it is easy for an employer to say that they are a company that is capable of accommodating differing perspectives. Unfortunately, this is seldom the case. Employing a diverse workforce creates many other challenges for the business, including providing fair treatment and promoting good customer service.

Building a culture of inclusion requires that employers develop open, honest lines of communication. The best workplaces have open lines of communication because they foster a sense of pride and purpose, and employees are naturally attracted to a work environment that is supportive and nurturing. If an employer cannot or chooses not to build an inclusive environment, it could mean trouble down the road. Creating an inclusive environment is hard work, but businesses that want to succeed are going to have to do it.

Every business with employees should look into diversity training if they want to be successful. Creating an inclusive environment is the best way to draw a diverse population and keep them. It is also the best way to attract the very best people to be a part of your business. Employee engagement and recruitment are essential in a competitive business world.
