Strong leadership exists at every level of the organization: from CEO to workers in a factory. Effective leadership has a direct positive effect on overall worker satisfaction, overall organizational performance, engagement and retention, and even employee morale and performance. In fact, a recent study revealed that “employees with more leadership-related skills performed better in the job market, were less likely to be terminated, had better career advancement, and enjoyed significantly higher job satisfaction than those with fewer leadership skills.”
Good leaders come in many forms. Some are “leader-type” people who are self-reliant and able to lead. Others are more “team-type” leaders, who know how to lead by example, while others are “interpersonal” leaders, who bring their individual qualities to the table, often bringing a different perspective. Leadership skills are developed through training and experience, but if we want to foster a leadership style that truly works, we need to take a closer look at leadership styles themselves.
When developing a leadership style, there are a number of things to consider. First, we need to understand what the goal is for our team. Are we trying to create a culture of excellence in the workplace or are we attempting to improve morale? Or do we just want to set the tone for the company?
Leaders have different perspectives on the purpose of work. Some believe that all work is vital and that there is no work that is not valuable. Others think that there are a number of things that go into making a company successful. Many of these goals overlap, which is why it’s important to identify the purpose before designing a leadership style. Next, identify how the team interacts with the leaders. Are they “on board,” meaning they are happy and engaged, or do they feel like they are being forced to conform to the leader’s will?
Another important question to ask yourself is “Does the leader inspire me to do my best?” If the answers to both questions are “yes,” then it is clear that a strong leader can motivate and inspire. employees and it is likely that they are also a strong team player.
Next, we need to look at the behaviors of good leaders. Does the leader set a vision and take the initiative to achieve it, or does he or she work around an organizational chart? When a leader steps up and takes charge of the project completion, they can build trust and confidence between themselves and the team.
Finally, we need to look at the behaviors that show leadership skills. Does the leader lead in the manner that you would expect a teacher to lead a classroom, where you are the leader is a student? Is the leader able to encourage and provide examples? to encourage and develop a sense of teamwork?
As with the behaviors, we also need to pay close attention to the behaviors. If a leader does not make clear expectations, or does not motivate, then you may not be dealing with someone who possesses leadership skills. It may take some work to find the right person, but eventually you will discover that you are dealing with someone who has what it takes to lead effectively.
Another area that is important is trust and credibility. You can work with a lot of good people who have good leadership skills, but if you are not working with someone who is trustworthy and credible, you won’t get the most out of the relationship. You may even be doing more harm than good by working with someone who is not credible. It is crucial that you are working with an individual who is trustworthy and credible so that you can build trust and credibility, as well as trust and confidence with your team members.
The last area that is important for effective leadership is communication, because effective leaders are able to listen to others and use their words to communicate clearly. and efficiently.
Once you recognize these five characteristics of a strong leader, you’ll be able to understand how to set goals, inspire your team members, help build trust and credibility, and communicate clearly, and efficiently, and provide examples and encouragement. Leadership skills are not easy to master, and it takes a great deal of practice to become an excellent leader.
