ABSCENT RECEIVES NATIONAL LOTTERY FUNDING

AbScent, the charity that supports people impacted by all types of smell disorders, is delighted to announce that it has been awarded a £10,000 grant from the National Lottery. The award will enable AbScent to implement their Peer Support Programme supporting some of the 4 million people in the UK estimated to be currently affected by smell loss.

AbScent facilitate a thriving online community and deliver peer support, trusted information and educational services with the aim of reducing isolation, loneliness, depression and helping those affected find a better quality of life.

The new funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest funder of community activity in the UK, will see The Peer Support Programme operate:

  • facilitated forums to share experience and knowledge
  • group activities
  • training courses
  • webinars featuring specialists in olfactory disorders
  • information to help sufferers self-manage conditions
  • access to scientific research

Smell training is one of the only treatments evidenced to improve smell. Smell training is the process of actively sniffing the same four scents every day, spending around 20 seconds on each scent with intense concentration. It is easy, safe, and recommended by doctors. Anyone can do smell training if they would like to improve their sense of smell.

Now, thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to deliver so much support to people of all ages and all walks of life who find themselves severely impacted by smell loss. It will enable us to step in and provide much needed support for those who need it.”

Smell loss includes a broad range of conditions including, anosmia, hyposmia, parosmia, and phantosmia. AbScent has an unrivalled resource of trusted information delivered by a distinguished advisory board and working with the latest scientific and clinical evidence. AbScent advocates to increase understanding and raise awareness of the conditions and their impacts supporting research into smell conditions.
