Wimbledon, South West London
Grand Velo Tours today announced the launch of a fully supported cycling tour of France for amateur riders, which replicates the 1972 route of the Tour de France. The adventure takes place over three weeks in June/July 2023 and totals 3,000km.
Due to its famous climbs, the Tour de France is that ‘Bucket List’ challenge for virtually every cyclist. Not only is the race world famous, but the 1972 route was won by the legendary Eddy Merckx as he dominated in the 1970s.

Now, riders from the UK are able to replicate the iconic 1972 route in an event organised by Wimbledon’s Grand Velo Tours (‘GVT’). A ride-in ride-out route, support and accommodation is ably managed by the experienced team at GVT. Mechanical support and roadside feed stops are also included. The Classic Tour (Nantes to Paris) runs from 17 June to 9 July (priced at £5,500) and there is a Demi Tour from 28 June to 9 July (at £3,500).
Grand Velo Tours’ Chris Lewis (pictured) explained: “Whilst the Classic Tour is not for beginners, it is totally achievable for women and men; with training. It’s the equivalent of riding from London to Edinburgh and back, 5 times. The Demi Tour is an easier undertaking but still includes mountain stages across the famous Mont Ventoux and Alpe d’Huez. This is an opportunity to push your limits, make new friends along the way. If you are into your cycling, with the right preparation, this could truly be the experience of a lifetime.”
Places on both the Classic and Demi Tours are limited, and can be booked now as individuals or groups at www.grandvelotours.com
