Finding her usual workload significantly reduced, Fern focused her endless energy and newfound time into her passion project; to create an alcohol-free version of a much-loved, family favourite drink. With her family hailing from Southern California, Tequila has always been a highly celebrated drink, brought out multiple times throughout the year on special occasions and holidays. However fully aware there are members of society who can’t or don’t drink, Fern’s aim was to concoct a delicious ‘alcoternative’ with inclusion being at the very heart of her mission.
Putting her life savings on the line Fern took the plunge, single-handedly working on every element of the business. Following seven months of sourcing the most authentic ingredients, rigorous tasting, testing and evolution, Mockingbird Spirit was born in August 2020. Using carefully selected, authentic Blue Weber Agave sourced directly from Mexico, with tasting notes of sweet vanilla, cinnamon and the perfect hint of habanero, Mockingbird Spirit beautifully embodies the spirit of the Mockingbird; proudly mimicking the traditional taste of tequila, it is both evocative and moreish.
With health and wellness consistently at the forefront of Fern’s mind, Mockingbird Spirit also includes the hero ingredient Ashwagandha, an adaptogen that helps your body manage stress and anxiety. Prominent in the art of Ayurveda, this medicinal herb can diminish cortisol levels and boost your energy, leaving the consumer feeling productive and creative rather than bored or lethargic. It makes a welcome addition to a sober night and a sober life beyond that.
Fern spoke passionately about the project: “It’s extremely exciting to have brought my vision of Mockingbird Spirit to life, using our authentic Mexican ingredients with the added functionality of the adaptogen Ashwagandha. Whilst currently a very unique product, we hope it brings a sense of inclusivity to drinkers and non-drinkers alike. Everyone deserves to have all the margaritas with none of the migraines, whether you’re cutting back, cutting out, pregnant, driving or just wanting to sample something a little bit different. Hopefully, Mockingbird Spirit can tick some boxes that until now have been left unticked.”
‘Mock-o-rita’s aside, Mockingbird Spirit is also designed to be enjoyed in a myriad of mocktails or paired with fresh lime and a club soda mixer.
