Plasma waters CEO Robert Hardt on connecting science and technology with social and environmental challenges

Food production needs to increase by 70% by 2050 on a global level, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Yet, the global food demand and supply gap continue to grow incessantly. The need to find innovative solutions with immediate and practical applications is imperative.

Plasma Waters has developed a technology to address various global challenges, including food security and safe water access and safety. The company’s continuous-flow cold plasma technology eliminates bacteria and viruses from water and provides a fully-scalable solution for agriculture and food supply chains on demand.  Robert Hardt, CEO of Plasma Waters, discusses this breakthrough technology and how Plasma Waters is addressing these critical challenges faced by humanity.

Tell me about Plasma Waters, when were you founded and what does your technology accomplish?

Plasma Waters is dedicated to developing and deploying breakthrough technology and innovation to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges like water security and food deficit. Our technology addresses the global water crisis by transforming  any water into Plasma-ized WaterTM,  which has been proven to boost agricultural production and has been validated in industrial settings.

Our technology results in faster and more efficient germination, accelerates growth, and prevents the transmission of plant pathogens. Plasma-ized Water is also a food preserver and disinfectant,  and has applications across the entire food production value chain from field to table. We are looking to address food insecurity in the era of climate change with our crop-to-table sustainable solutions.

What is your background and how did that help you enter this industry? What made you want to get involved in this industry?

I began my career as an electrical engineer with Siemens AG Canada in 1988. From 2012 to 2016, I served as President and CEO of Siemens Canada Limited and later became a General Partner at Next47, a venture capital company backed by Siemens AG, headquartered in Palo Alto, CA USA and Munich, Germany.

I’ve always been interested in technology and the impact technology can have on people. With Plasma Waters, we can have an immense impact on some of the most pressing issues facing humanity. Plasma Waters is bringing the next round of the green revolution, and that is something I’m very passionate about.

Our patented technology is scalable, proven and has multiple applications.  Approximately 80% of agriculture is small farmers. We decentralize and democratize the agriculture industry, which I think makes it more resilient in terms of avoiding disruptions in the supply chain, avoiding fluctuation in pricing and also providing accessibility.

How does Plasma Waters enhance agriculture?

Our patented technology has immense potential to help farmers and increase food production. Through extensive field tests at large scale in the USA, it has been validated that Plasma-ized Water enables better and faster growth, deeper root mass, disease resistance and stress tolerance levels in plants. This results into higher quantity and better quality of yields for farmers with reduction in chemicals usage during the farming process which makes it a very healthy proposition for consumers & much needed sustainable practice for our environment. Results have shown up to 20% increase in agricultural output. Plasma-ized Water can be the answer to a more sustainable future.

Are the environmental benefits of using your technology?

Plasma Waters is a sustainable crop performance water technology. It helps increase productivity and reduce the use of harmful chemicals. It provides an eco-friendly solution for agribusiness, providing organic disease control, organic yield and quality enhancement, optimization of water and irrigation, and water circularity. Additionally, the agricultural run-off does not contaminate either the surface water or the underground, leaving the planet safer for future generations. Providing environmentally friendly solutions is at the core of our technology.

Can Plasma Waters help communities prepare for the challenges of climate change?

Globally, food production needs to increase by 70 percent by 2050, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. And the gap between the global food demand and supply continues to grow. We need to find immediate and effective ways of addressing these issues relating to the global water crisis and food insecurity. Plasma Waters’ technology was developed to help address these very challenges. Our technology contributes to global food security by enabling the significant increase of food production.

Your tagline, “Innovation with Purpose.” Can you explain what that means to you?

Despite the incredible technological progress achieved in the last decades, there is a massive need to connect advanced innovation and science with the major social and environmental issues facing the world. The founder of Plasma Waters, Alfredo Zolezzi, created the company with the goal of establishing this connection. “Innovation with Purpose” captures this very idea of connecting transformative technology to real-world challenges to have an important and positive social, economic and environmental impact.
