The Guardian estimates that there are 79 million vegans around the world. The worldwide vegan food market grew from $14.44 billion in 2020 to $15.77 billion in 2021 and is forecast to continue growing for the next several years. A new report by FMI predicts it will exceed a value of $73 billion by 2028.
It is clear veganism is increasingly becoming accessible, with consumers being able to find alternatives more readily in stores and even when they can’t they are able do so online, getting their plant-based alternatives conveniently delivering to their doorsteps.
Amazon revealed vegan selection increased by 23% since 2020 and the sales of vegan products has increased 61% year on year.
One of the most popular vegan products on Amazon in 2021 was plant-based milk, in particular: The Original Oatly Barista 1L, Oatly The Original Oat Drink 1L and Alpro Almond Unsweetened Drink 1L.
Search data available also revealed the most popular products on AmazonFresh to be Itsu Teriyaki Chicken Vegan Gyozas, Chicago Town Takeaway Vegan Tomato Sauce Stuffed Crust Pizza, Magnum Vegan Almond Ice cream and Chicago Town Tomato Stuffed Crust Takeaway Sticky BBQ Jackfruit Pizza. This would suggest people are using convenient online marketplaces to search for alternatives to comfort foods and snacks that are usually predominately non-vegan.
The plant-based sector’s continued success is greatly down to innovators, many being small businesses. The vegan sectors expanding diverse portfolio of products is driven by people, problem-solving and passion. True inspiration and entrepreneurial spirit are transforming this space.
Plant-based small business brands are gaining market share in various industries across the globe. It’s more than a trend and shows no signs of slowing down.
Superfoodio is a great example of a small business that has changed the game for the vegan world and is seeing rapid growth:
Superfoodio Changes the Way We Eat Peanut Butter On The Go!
Founded by husband-and-wife foodie entrepreneurs Jagir and Nirali Mankodi, Superfoodio ( vegan confectionery brand) was created with a passion to make scrumptious vegan, healthy, 100% plant-based, refined sugar-free snacks available for everyone.
In 2015, Jagir & Nirali resigned from their successful corporate careers to backpack across South America. Being on a plant-based diet, they thought they’d struggle to find suitable food to fuel their many adventures. However, by immersing themselves into the local culture, Jagir and Nirali discovered first-hand how the local people lived off the earth in a sustainable manner and think generations ahead.
Inspired by the trip upon returning home, the couple applied their new found passion and knowledge in the kitchen and so Superfoodio was born. Since their 2016 launch their tasty nutritious vegan treats were a hit, and have even been recognised by various sporting stars. They recall at one of their first events tennis superstar Novak Djokovic gave his seal of approval and took home a few bags full of Superfoodio treats!
When the pandemic impacted high-street sales, Superfoodio turned to Amazon to launch their vegan peanut butter chocolates and quickly saw a huge growth. “Selling on Amazon simplified the buying and selling experience,” explains Jagir and Nirali. “It put our products in front of millions of new customers, and particularly during the pandemic made up for the lack of high street sales.” In particular, their vegan peanut butter chocolate bars have proven to be extremely popular selling over 20,000 units on Amazon within months of launching.
Enjoying raving customer reviews and with Fulfilment by Amazon taking away the stress of the delivery process, Jagir and Nirali have been able to focus on doing what they do best, which is to innovate and concoct delicious new vegan recipes in the kitchen. Fuelled by their mutual love for peanut butter, they now launched their latest healthy, high-fibre, easy-to-eat Peanut Butter Buttons that can be enjoyed anywhere at any time! It’s a world-first in the snack world and they continue to see huge growth.
Peanut butter lovers can now, for the first time in history, satisfy their craving for pure peanut butter on the go, without any of the mess, with Superfoodio’s innovative new Peanut Butter Buttons.
The couple says, “we wanted a simpler way to enjoy peanut buttery goodness on-the-go. The problem with a jar (or a squeezy pack) is that you always end up with sticky fingers and an oily mess! That’s why we created our Peanut Butter Buttons that you can hold in your hand. They are the perfect snack to satisfy that peanut butter craving anywhere, anytime. No jars, no mess, no fuss!”
The buttons come in four flavours, Original, Coco Crunch, PBJ and Original Plus. Superfoodio’s Peanut Butter Buttons retail for £1.59 and can be purchased directly on their website at Superfoodio.com, or through Amazon UK.
