When it comes to a new business venture, few are as surprisingly profitable as candle-making. The past few years of lockdowns gave entrepreneurs the free time to turn a hobby into a lucrative career and now scented candles have become a big business. A report showed that UK consumers spent £418m on candles between March 2021 and 2022 of the same month.
You make a decent profit right out of your home with candle-making but there are some basic equipment and gadgets you need to get you set up. Having the proper tools will help you craft better products so it’s in your best interest to invest. Here is everything you need to know about the candle-making essentials you need for your business:
Containers and moulds
You’ll need containers and moulds on hand to set your candles in and the ones you’ll use depend on what you want the end product to look like. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and with the amount of competition out there, it’s best to get as creative as possible.
Thermometers
There is some debate amongst candlemakers about the necessity of a thermometer but having one on hand means you can monitor the heat of your wax as it melts. You’ll know exactly when it has cooled enough to add fragrance and pour into your moulds.
Pouring jug
This might seem obvious, but you’ll need something to pour out that hot wax. You need something that is heat resistant and that you don’t mind getting messy – wax can build up and cause streaks, so you probably don’t want to use your best crockery!
Heat gun
When it comes to a finished product, you want it to be as polished as possible. You don’t want any imperfections that will deter your customers unless that is the look you’re going for! You can use a heat gun from RS to smooth any air bubbles that have risen to the surface or flaws that occur when you remove the wick holder.
Pipette
An easy-to-forget piece of kit is the pipette. When it comes to adding fragrances you’ll need one, especially if you want to avoid overpowering your candle or running the risk of not adding enough. There are plenty of atmospheric scents to go in your candles so just pick your favourites and away you go.
Wick holders
You would be surprised at how difficult getting your candle wick to stay in place is, especially if you’re going for a creative design. That is where a wick holder comes in! It’s just a simple small tube that helps you feed in your wick and holds it in place.
