Kent-based Roadfill set to scale up for further growth as new Plymouth road pilot launches
Roadfill, a UK company which has developed a unique solution using plastic waste to repair and maintain roads, has been awarded a contract to supply its product for roadworks in the Greek Islands.
The Dartford-headquartered company will begin work in early 2022, using its environmentally-friendly Roadworx product for road maintenance programmes in Corfu, Rhodes and across the Dodecanese Islands. Roadworx contains recycled plastic polymers which are added to asphalt mix, reducing the amount of bitumen needed to repair or relay a road. The product reduces landfill waste and CO₂ emissions while providing local authorities with a more cost-effective solution in covering potholes and managing road repairs – current costs for these works in the UK alone are estimated to be £10 billion, according to the Asphalt Industry Alliance.
Jointly funded by the islands’ local authorities and the country’s central government, the new contract follows a partnership pilot between Roadfill and the Greek Government’s R&D Division. Founded in 2017 by Christie Raptaki, Roadfill has is focused on innovative and cost-effective road repair solutions which reduce the level of plastic waste. The company has now announced plans to launch a fundraise to support further investment in additional mobile asphalt plants and other machinery to help it scale up for future growth.

In November Roadfill will begin an 18-month sustainability-focused road repair pilot in Plymouth, supported by a £350K grant from Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership. Last year the company secured a Keep+ European funding grant of more than €100K to support a sustainability partnership programme with the University of Greenwich and Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge.
